The 1998 Bass and Flinders Coin and Stamp Pack recognises the achievements of George Bass and Matthew Flinders on their historic journey 200 years ago, proving the existence of Bass Strait.The Royal Australian Mint has released a coin set to pay tribute to the two determined men responsible for this feat: George Bass and Matthew Flinders

Packs consisting of a specimen quality 1998 Bass & Flinders Fifty cent coin and two 45 cent Tools of Exploration Postage Stamps were jointly issued by Australia Post and the Royal Australian Mint, Canberra on 10th September, 1998.

The trio are housed in a First Day Cover envelope This issue is Special Limited Coin Fair Edition with an ink mark which reads 'ANDA COIN, NOTE & STAMP SHOW , 1 NOVEMBER '98 SYDNEY NSW 2000' Other Issues of same mintage have 30 October and 31 October.
The other issues have been cancelled with a specially worded ink mark which reads 'First day of issue 10 September 1998 Navigators Vic 3352'
