Australian $1 Coins

2003 Australia's Volunteers

The 2003 $1 coin pays tribute to those 4.4 million Australian volunteers who give freely of their time to help others and benefit their communities.
Most Australians know of the importance of volunteers in our society. We are all proud of the internationally acknowledged work of the Sydney Olympic Volunteers and Australia is well known for its volunteer Surf Life Savers. In times of crisis many communities rely on the help of volunteer firefighters and State Emergency Services volunteers.
Australians are proud to volunteer, to offer their services to organisations they feel are important, whether it is helping young people, the elderly, caring for the environment or the community at large, fighting fires or providing emergency rescue and relief in times of natural disasters. The activities that Australians are involved in and the critical services they are prepared to offer freely are too many to list. We have a proud record of the help we are prepared to give those around us in times of need.
