Australian $1 Coins

1999 International Year of Older Persons

The United Nations declared 1999 as the International Year of Older Persons (IYOP). Australians will join to acknowledge the Year by embracing the theme "Australia towards a society for all ages". In an ageing Australia the theme is appropriate, recognising the importance of fostering intergenerational activities and understanding to create a balance between tradition and innovation in economic, social and cultural development.
The logo featured on the IYOP coin in this set has great symbolic significance, emphasising vitality, diversity and interdependence. The image also illustrates movement and progression.
Mint sculptor Wojciech Pietranik re-created the logo on the reverse of this coin.
