Australian $1 Coins

1997 Dual Pack, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith

1997 marks the centenary of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith's birth. In his honour, the Royal Australian Mint is releasing this unique pair of one dollar coins, each bearing a different image of the aviator. This is the first time the Mint released a dual set of this kind.
"Smithy" is depicted with his Fokker monoplane, the famous "Southern Cross" in which he flew his way into the history books, and into the hearts of Australians. One of the coins features a map showing the routes of some of his record-breaking flights.
Sir Charles Kingsford Smith was described by his contemporaries as the greatest man ever to fly. First a war hero, then a record-breaking aviator, his wartime exploits with the Royal Flying Corps earned him the Military Cross. It was the first of many honours, including a knighthood bestowed in 1932 for services to aviation. He was the first to fly across the Pacific Ocean and went on to break many more aviation records.
