Australian Silver Kookaburra

1990 1oz Silver $5 Kookaburra

.999 Fine Silver

Perth Mint’s Kookaburra coins date back to 1990 when they first minted 1oz Proof and Specimen quality coins for the first time. Although minted in 1990 they weren’t actually released until March 1991 at the Sydney International Coin Fair. The Specimen Kookaburras won the 1991 “Most Popular Coin of the Year” award conducted by World Coin News.
Both proof and specimen coins had a face value of $5. The $5 face value was retained for the 1oz proof in 1991 however the 1991 specimen and all other subsequent issues have a face value of $1.

These coins are the only major legal tender, pure silver bullion coins to change their design each year.
The initial issue was of 300,000 coins was over-subscribed by 5 times. This led to a brief period of "Kooka-mania" which quickly died out as the Perth Mint churned out new releases. In the following years there can be up to 76 different versions of the Kookaburra for just one year.
The Frosted Uncirculated coins were released with no packaging at all, which allowed them to be handled , as is evidenced by the fingerprints on this coin. However it has also allowed them to tone, with some developing some quite nice colours.
