1988 saw the bicentenary of Captain Arthur Phillip's arrival with the First Fleet in Sydney Harbour in 1788 and the founding of the city of Sydney and the colony of New South Wales.

The Royal Australian Mint released this commemorative 50c as part of the celebrations, with the reverse showing a ship, a compass and a map of New Holland (Australia), surrounded with the legends "Australia 1788-1988" and "Fifty Cents". The obverse is the standard Raphael Maklouf designed version.
